Engrossed in story Consumed by creativity The Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass Tana French and her Murder Squad What do these have in common? For me it's the somber in the horror The melancholy that lingers long after The broken characters stuck in ambiguous endings Still broken after the last page turns After the last credit rolls The powerful, sorrowful, monologues they weave To warn others To lament if not learn That's what draws me in Keeps me captive, crying, and enthralled The mix of sadness in the suspense When they blend together seamlessly Neither one overtaking, neither too subtle That's how I fall into the experience Never wanting to return to a world Where there aren't such beautiful relationship arcs Stories that pierce the heart and make you jump Lyric and prose that wrap me up Where I stay happily Waiting for another story of the same These are my musings while I watch The Haunting of Hill House for the third (or is it fourth?) and Midnight Mass for the second time. As I watch the relationships shift and change, the depth to the characters and their connections with the others, the long monologues that break my heart so good. And it came to me - that's what I love most about my favorite dark shows, my favorite books. It's the sorrow in the horror, the melancholy in the darkness, that brings me fulfillment. The same with reads by Flynn, French, Pessel, or Palahniuk. Pair these themes, blend them seamlessly, and you'll keep me a fan for life. What about you? What blends make you go weak in the knees every time? Share your thoughts and they may spark another musing of mine to pair with an illustration. Be a part of my process and let me draw out the thoughts with you as a partner.
