Hi, I'm Maria! Just a badass bestselling author
writing about bitches, breakups, and bloodbaths
Hi, I'm Maria! I like to think that I'm a badass USA Today and internationally bestselling indie author (read more about why I choose indie here), that lives in Minnesota despite the frozen winters. Actually, I prefer snowdrifts and icicles over summer and all that sweat running everywhere. Mostly.
I write under several pen names in several genres. Under Maria Ann Green I write nonfiction to help others. Under my pen name, Maria Ann Germain I write romances, sometimes funny and sometimes angsty, but always steamy! And under M.A. Green, I write thrillers and horrors that are always dark, creepy, or twisted.
I live with my husband and little family, which includes a few lazy cats who make great lap warmers, and a giant chocolate lab who thinks she's still a lap dog despite her size. You can usually find me wishing I lived in a secret cabin in the woods where I could be a hermit reading and writing all of the time. Instead, I live the suburban life where I pretend to my neighbors and the other moms around that I don’t swear like a sailor, have hidden tattoos, and love a good bottle of wine. I absolutely believe in unicorns and ghosts and hope vampires and monsters are real too. I'm a coffee-in-the-morning and alcohol-in-the-evening kind of person, preferably with a nap in between. I prefer cats over dogs (though, somehow now I have both), books over people, and late nights over early mornings. I probably shouldn’t talk to anyone until I've had my first cup of coffee, extra sugar. And if you ever want to hang out with me, you’ll have to be game for a horror movie or just a quick run to target for two (hundred) little things. Also, you couldn’t pay me to be in my twenties again; Thirties is where it’s at. I'm a creative, mouthy, introverted, proud bisexual, highly-sensitive INFP-T, chronic pain spoonie warrior, miscarriage mama (read more about that here), Slytherpuff, dork with a sweet-tooth.
I devour books, reading mostly in bed or listening to audiobooks in the car. Writing has been one of my passions for pretty much my whole life. So creativity is a necessity for me, always. After working in the mental health field for almost a decade, I'm now working on living my dream as a stay-at-home writer, kiddo wrangler, professional snuggler, and constantly-tired-person. When it comes to my fiction, I specialize in dark and twisted thrillers or gritty, angsty contemporary romances. And I pour my heart out into helping those I can in my nonfiction. But no matter the genre, I always prefer writing deeply flawed characters with dysfunctional relationships. I'm pretty sure the whole "unlikable character" thing is a conspiracy because every character I love has been labeled this way. Ridiculous. And because of this, I've pretty much found it impossible to write anything without at least a little mayhem. And who doesn't like a dose of mayhem, or maybe malevolence, anyway?
I was once told I paint with my words, and that phrase stuck with me - because writing really is an art, and good stories are true masterpieces. I'm always trying to grow and improve in my craft, shooting for a masterpiece with every story, every chapter. And I plan to write forever because writing gives me the ability to disappear into new worlds and create people within twisting plots, all from the comfort of my couch. Or locked in the bathroom because that's the only place the kid and pets will leave me be, but only when I lock the door. Also in the middle of the night on the notes app of my phone. A girl's gotta make limited time work!
I will always believe that though not every story is for me, and my stories aren't for everyone, every story has a reader.
